Our team developed the full experience over the course of 5 months including creative direction, motion control systems design, KUKA language programming, and installation of the robotic arm at the museum. From the artist: “THE BEACH” - Roy NachumIn Nachum’s installation the Robot takes on the artists alter-ego, moving through different human emotions in the presence of natural elements. The robot takes on various roles, from human-like interactions, writing messages in the sand to mimicking natural elements to “wash” away the sand. The Batting Lab was the recepient of several awards - ADC, CLIO, Effie, and Webbys, Shortlisted for 2023 Cannes Lion. The goal of the experience was to get kids excited about data by recontextualizing the way data plays into their lives.Volvox Labs was responsible for everything from content production, fabrication, software development, art direction, and on site installation.&nbsp;Instead of looking at spreadsheets and boring graphs, The Batting Lab provided interactive data visualizations, amazing flashes of light and color when they hit a baseball, and a completely immersive environment for them to explore. The Batting Lab gave students a material connection to their data: how they hit a baseball and how they are improving over time. These data points gave kids a reason to care about what the data really was telling them, and what that data means for them in the future. A completely bespoke learning experience, The Batting Lab emerges as a new approach combining interactive installation and long term narrative. Volvox Labs' technology, sound, and fabrication teams came together to create a large-scale interactive installation with Emilie Baltz for FX. TEMPO is an interactive sculpture that draws inspiration from the visual rhythm and modernist architecture of Chicago, as well as the comedic timing that the Windy City is famous for. Using metallic strings, it creates the world's first 6-sided comedic harp. By connecting specialized sensors to each string, the team created an interactive system allowing user interaction to trigger an assortment of corresponding sounds. These sounds are artfully woven into an already vibrant background track that is further amplified by an array of FX elements, all of which are contained within this awe-inspiring sculpture. The team accomplished the challenging task of creating an interactive instrument that could withstand the use of multiple fans and endure tough weather conditions in downtown Chicago. To achieve this, they utilized aluminum framing, dibond, and integrated smart technology. They extensively tested the instrument to ensure its performance for any user and trigger amount as well as the ability to withstand various weather conditions, resulting in a successful outcome. This project won an award at&nbsp;2022 ADC ONE SHOW for DESIGN. Bombay tapped Volvox Labs to create the software and infrastructure which powered the auction. The more joy the artwork gives the senses of the viewer, the higher their bid. On October 19th, 2021, participants came to experience the Sensory Auction and place their bid, but only one person went home with an original art piece created by artist Dan Lam.
